DR ASHA - ROSE MIGIRO KWENDA HAITI

UN Deputy Secretary General Asha-Rose Migiro

UN deputy Secretary General Asha- Rose Migiro is to travel to Haiti Sunday to assess conditions in camps for people displaced by the January earthquake, including sexual violence against women, the world body said Friday.

Farhan Haq, a UN spokesman, told a press briefing that UN chief Ban Ki-moon was sending Migiro "to survey the situation in the camps, assess the steps that have been taken and explore areas for further action."

Ban's deputy was to meet with Haitian President Rene Preval and other senior government officials, he added.

Migiro was also to spend Sunday night in one of the camps for Haitians displaced since the devastating January 12 quake and meet with residents and police "to assess efforts to protect the people from sexual violence and related problems," Haq said.

On Monday, the deputy UN secretary general was to visit Leogane, a western coastal town largely wiped out by the quake, to discuss child protection issues with Haitian officials. Migiro was to speak to the press Tuesday before flying back to New York.
